In 1949, the renowned Swiss photographer René Groebli took the photographs for an essay that was far ahead of its time. The first edition of Rail Magic, titled Magie der Schiene, contained a selection of just fourteen images and has long been out of print. With this expanded new edition, Groebli hopes to once again allow readers to experience the magic of a bygone era.

The photographs are about the experience of train travel, particularly speed and movement. Groebli captures this by making simple, graphic pictures, and construction a series of formal variations that investigate blurring and freezing movement, sharp and soft focus. The result is an extremely elegant mood piece, a self-assigned project turned into an immaculate showcase for the talents of all concered.
