After a successful career as an advertising and commercial photographer, René Groebli retired from professional life in 1981. He travelled the Mediterranean region increasingly and returned to black and white photography, including in Crete in 1981, where he photographed olive groves, barren hills and wild stretches of coastline.
These landscape photographs are complemented by a series of photographs of figurines from the Minoan civilisation, which disappeared around 1100 BC, taken in 1980 in the archaeological museums of Heraklion and Chania.
