In this second volume of his Variations, after the first sold out, René Groebli places the emphasis on the ability of colour photography to convey information strickingly.
The intellect (or the inward eye) dominates - or at least complements - the famous eye of the photographer. Thus Groebli's work breaks away from aesthetic effects and acquires an almost unprecedented power of photographic statement.
The colour photograph becomes a medium for the precise transmission of ideas, impressions or messages. Groebli achieves this concentrated eloquence by calling on his intellectual and technical resources in order to divest the subject of its familiar features and to reveal it in a novel light. For this purpose he utilises a remarkable armamentarium of photographic, laboratory and reproduction techniques.
But Groebli's work is not a theoretical treatise. Most of the examples shown are practical works done in execution of commissions from clients, many of whom are firms of world-wide repute.
VARIATION 2 will thus be a stimulus and a guide to evey designer in quest of new and striking forms of expression. The book shows that the photographer with a mind (and not only an eye) can play an important role in the creative process.
A particular valuable feature of the work is provided by the explanations of the technical and stylistic aspects of colour photography. It will thus be readily understood not only by the professional but also by the amateur.
